DLAGE - Free Program to Display Licensee's Age
 Description
DLAGE is a simple, free, text-based program that accepts AAMVA driver's license data scanned from just about any magnetic stripe reader that sends data to the keyboard port of a "PC-compatible" computer. As the drivers license is scanned, DLAGE reads the data stream, culls the name and birthdate fields and displays the results on the screen.

The driver's license data must adhere to AAMVA DL/ID Standard (.PDF document). As of July 2000, there were only 10 states alleged to conform to the AAMVA standard for magnetic coding of driver's licenses.
Note about drivers licenses!

• Not all states use mag stripe encoding on their drivers licenses.

• Just because your state has mag stripe encoding does NOT mean the format is AAMVA-compatible. Just because your license reads ok doesn't mean your brother's license will read ok (Some states are running differing standards concurrently)!

• Some states have enacted legislation making it illegal to scan drivers licenses (ex. Texas SB1445 effective Sept 1, 2003) (.PDF document).

• There is NO universal standard for encoding data on drivers licenses. The most universal encoding format is published by the AAMVA. (Efforts to adopt the AAMVA format as a universal standard have met with resistance from several groups. Additional details available at the AAMVA site.)

• DLAGE is designed to read the magnetic stripe on AAMVA-compatible driver's licenses ONLY. If you scan a driver's license into DLAGE and get a "Scan Error" the most-likely cause is a driver's license format that is not AAMVA-compatible. (The least-likely cause is a defective magnetic stripe reader.)

 DLAGE Uses
  • AAMVA Format Test - If you swipe driver's license and DLAGE display's birthday and age, license is probably AAMVA-compatible format.
  • Clubs, Bars, Restaurants, C-Stores, Package/Liquor Stores - Swipe driver's license into DLAGE to display and confirm patron's legal age real time (based on clock setting of computer).
 Features
  • Works with just about any computer running DOS or Windows (Function... not form)
  • Should be compatible with virtually any magnetic stripe reader that sends data to the keyboard port.
  • Automatically calculates and displays age and highlights the birthday field if age below 21. Age alert/highlight calculated real time (based on clock setting of computer).
  • No charge! Free! Zip! Nada! No cost!
 Requirements
  • 286, 386, 486 or Pentium (IBM compatible) PC. (DLAGE is a text-base program that does not require Windows to run.)
  • MS DOS 3.1 or Higher (Windows optional)
  • Monitor
  • Magnetic stripe reader that sends data to the keyboard port. Should be ISO 7811 compatible (this covers most readers that scan credit cards, as well as AAMVA-compatible readers).

 Making it Work
Step
1
Install & Configure Magnetic Stripe Reader - (Remember, your magnetic stripe reader must be configured to send the data to the keyboard port.)

Step
2
Test Magnetic Stripe Reader - This verifies that the reader is properly connected and sending data to the computer keyboard port.

DOS - At the command prompt, type EDIT [Enter]. Scan a driver's license or credit card. If credit card, data should begin with the "%" character and include credit card number and cardholder's name. If driver's license, data should begin with the "%" or ";" character and licensee's birthyear, birthmonth and birthdate should be recognizable. Close EDIT when done.

Windows - Open Notepad. (In Windows 98, click [Programs] [Accessories] [Notepad]) Scan a driver's license or credit card. If credit card, data should begin with the "%" character and include credit card number and cardholder's name. If driver's license, data should begin with the "%" or ";" character and licensee's birthyear, birthmonth and birthdate should be recognizable. Close NOTEPAD when done.

Note - If no data is displayed on the screen when scanning a credit card or driver's license in either of the above tests, your reader is not properly installed or not configured to send data to the keyboard port. Until you correct the problem, DLAGE cannot work.

Step
3
Acquire DLAGE - Download here . Save to any directory/folder on your fixed disk drive (Make note of the folder name). This is an uncompressed '.exe' (executable) file approximately 47.5kb in size. (Your firewall software might not like that.)

Step
4
Starting DLAGE - DOS - At the command prompt, use the DOS CD command to change to the folder/directory where you saved DLAGE in the previous step. Type DLAGE [Enter]. The program should start. When your screen is waiting with the message "Scan Drivers License Now," scan a driver's license. Display should show birthdate and age. If you receive an error message "Error, Scan Again" license is probably not AAMVA-compatible.

Windows - Click [Start] [Run] [Browse]. Locate the folder/directory where you saved DLAGE in step 3. Click on [DLAGE]. The program should start. When your screen is waiting with the message "Scan Drivers License Now," scan a driver's license. Display should show birthdate and age. If not, license is probably not AAMVA-compatible.
